Superfruits
If you have ever wondered about superfruits, here is all you need to know, as well as how they benefit Mervue Organic products.
What makes a superfruit a superfruit in skincare?
Well, one could say all fruits are superfruits. While all fruits, vegetables, nuts, plants and seeds have nutritional values packed with nutrients and vitamins and minerals, superfruits and superberries stand out more than others mainly because of their nutritional profile.
These superfruits contain antioxidants including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium and ubiquinone (C0 enzyme Q10). Antioxidants protect your skin by limiting free radical production. Free radicals are compounds that speed up the ageing process and they can cause harm if the levels become too high in your body, breaking down skin tissue and collagen.
Your body produces antioxidants to keep free radicals under control. Antioxidants are also found in food - fruit, vegetables and plant-based wholefoods. Other key ingredients are polyphenols. Their primary purpose is to protect plants from their environments and are key in combating free radicals.
Like everything else, it is all about balance. Your body needs to maintain a healthy balance of antioxidants and free radicals to maintain homeostasis. Homeostasis is the ability to maintain stability internally despite what is happening externally. When free radicals outnumber antioxidants it can lead to oxidative stress which can lead to damaged cell DNA.
